MAC Course Basics
Foreground the MAC Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) your course is designated to deliver.
Create opportunities for your students to learn, practice, and demonstrate the MAC SLOs.
Link each MAC SLO to one or more specific student tasks or assignments.
State the MAC SLOs in the syllabus and note the assignments they link to.
General Expectations for your MAC Course
- The course must foreground the MAC competency Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) as primary learning objectives rather than make them secondary to disciplinary content. Disciplinary content can be used to teach MAC competencies; however, the focus of the course should be on the MAC competencies.
- The course must provide students with the opportunity to practice the MAC competency SLOs through the learning materials, experiences and assignments provided in the course. This may incorporate a variety of learning strategies chosen strategically to help students achieve the MAC competency.
- All instructors who teach a MAC course are required to list verbatim all Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) officially associated with your course’s MAC competency designation. In the syllabus library, list MAC SLOs for your course. The syllabus should also indicate how each MAC SLO will be assessed through specific student tasks, activities, or assignments (e.g., “In this course, student learning related to MAC Written Communication SLO 2 will be assessed through a research paper on a topic related to education”).
- As the instructor of record, you must be able to provide evidence that the general expectations mentioned above are being accomplished. Periodically, the Gen Ed Council will ask instructors to engage in assessment of the MAC program, and your assignments should provide students opportunities to demonstrate learning in each of the SLOs for those assessment purposes. You will also need student learning assessment data to inform your request to recertify the course, so make sure now that your course is set up for assessing the MAC competency learning outcomes.
